I was speaking to a prominent blogger on the phone yesterday, who disclosed to me that his web site, which is ranked #1 for a very popular political term, only generates enough revenue to pay for the site’s hosting.
I skimmed through his site and found various issues with the ad placements. It reminds me of a few Adsense tricks I’ve learned over the past couple of months which I will share with you today.
1. If you have a horizontal menu at the top of your site, place a 728×15 right beneathe or below the menu items. Adjust the background color/font color/font of both the menu items and the ads so they are either identical or they look identical.
There is an automatic association with ads to avoid them. This trick disguises your ad block to, at first glance, appear as if it is part of the site as a menu. If your menu is vertical, the same trick applies to the 200×90 ad block.
2. Placement of the ad block is crucial, especially on the front page. You don’t want your ad blocks on some corner at the end of the page somewhere, where it is segmented and alienated, and an obvious ad for users to avoid.
The only danger to this strategy is that if your site’s CTR is high enough it may hurt your indexing because instead of visitors staying to read the articles (which leads to backlinks) they are off exploring other sites. If you ask me, it’s a good problem to have.
